A monograph which, from a multi-/trans-disciplinary perspective, presents an overall analysis of a region that, with the disappearance of the Soviet order, has gained greater prominence on the international scene for different reasons: the political-cultural peculiarities of the republics which comprise it, the existence of energy resources that give it a new economic dimension, enhanced by the importance that the region has acquired as a strategic area in the fight against terrorism since 9-11. Aspects which have turned the region into an interesting “international experiment” in which researchers of contemporary international society can investigate the large issues of the global agenda locally.
In order to fill the existing gap in Spanish scholarship with regard to a global analysis of the region, this issue of Afers Internacionals considered the need to outline a generic and detailed map based on an analysis of the thematic peculiarities that make up the region, dealing with topics such as the identity perspective, the political and economic challenges of the new states, the analysis of energy resources, the configuration of foreign policy, etc. All of this is accompanied by different appendices which complement the final objective of facilitating a rapid, overall view of the region: country files, conflictivity in the region, thematic maps, a historical chronology and international organisations.
