Documentos CIDOB Migraciones, n.º 4

This document brings together the ideas from the initiative to open up dialogue with the Catalan security forces with regard to the link between immigration and security. In it, the professionals in this sector at the local and regional levels unanimously express their rejection of the idea of focusing the analysis of this issue on a single use of figures and statistics. This kind of information tends to distort reality and it contributes to reinforcing stereotypes and stigmatising the identification of the immigrant as a security threat. The managers of security emphasise the new preventative orientation that must define the action of the police forces, their responsibility when it comes to facilitating data in order to avoid creating false perceptions, as well as the need to train these forces, owing to the fact that they are public servants, so that they can manage the diversity of a new scenario, which, in multiplying in wealth and cultures, is also increasing in conflictiveness. A new heterogeneous situation which, as one of the authors of this compilation explains, poses the challenge of turning difficulties into opportunities, with the challenge of adopting new strategies that correspond to this new reality. The reflection is left open, with other questions, such as “Until when will we talk about the Immigrant” or “What are we looking for when we become interested in police statistics organised according to place of origin?”
