The island of Ireland, with a population of just over six million, has appeared several times in the international press, in relation to issues such as the Republic of Ireland's ‘yes’ vote to the Lisbon Treaty, the dismantling of the IRA in Northern Ireland and the enormous impact that the financial crisis has had on a country that had achieved successful economic growth. An exceptional case among wealthy nations, the island's sovereignty is shared between the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom, an issue that has, for decades, marked relations between the two states, as well as between the island’s different regions and communities, until the signing of a peace agreement, which was the culmination of a process commenced some years previously. Ireland is also notable for its international presence, which is supported by the Irish diaspora, both in its cultural aspects and in its active participation in United Nations missions and in defence of human rights. This monographic work highlights some of the key points that will help readers to understand the successes and failures of this island, and of the eponymous state to which it is home.
