International Special Edition in English: CIDOB International Yearbook 2009. Country profile: United States of America

International Special Edition
To coincide with its 20th edition, the CIDOB International Yearbook features two excellent analyses of the past two decades of international politics and Spain's foreign policy. Firstly, Alyson Bailes, a guest lecturer at the University of Iceland, analyses the evolution of international politics and relations since 1989, basing her article on different aspects of international politics: the evolution of world power structures, the triumph and crisis of capitalism, the new security agendas, the dynamics surrounding the increase in armaments and, finally, the European model of multilateral integration.
Secondly, Josep Antoni Duran i Lleida, President of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the Spanish Parliament, presents a summary of Spain's foreign relations that also covers the period from the first edition of the Yearbook – in 1989 – up until the present. Duran focuses his analysis on the integration process within the EU, relations with the United States, foreign policy toward the Mediterranean (with particular reference to the new organisation the Union for the Mediterranean), relations with Latin America, Asia and Africa, and the article ends with a summary of prospects for the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union during the first half of 2010.
This year, the habitual section Country profile is dedicated to the United States of America. The world's No. 1 power is experiencing one of the most exciting periods in its most recent history. The current world economic crisis, together with a series of complex domestic and foreign policy agendas, are the challenges that must be faced by the new Obama Administration, which began its mandate in January 2009.
The CIDOB International Yearbook systematically monitors the international panorama and Spain's foreign policy. It includes articles analysing the international economic situation, the EU's evolution and external action, Spain's overseas relations and the Spanish external economic sector, as well as a wide range of documentary appendices.
