The impact of the crisis on Barcelona’s ethnic pakistani economy
Pakistani businesses now form an essential part of Barcelona’s commercial landscape. Businesses of this type existed before the crisis, but have grown exponentially over the past decade, thanks to a series of changes in the city’s structure of opportunities. In a context in which many local traders have had to close down, this expansion has prompted many questions in the host society due to a lack of knowledge about the group’s internal organisation strategies. This paper analyses the effects of the crisis (post-2008) on the development of the ethnic economy led by Pakistani residents using the theory of “mixed embeddedness”, a multilevel analysis method and a mixed methods design.
