Scenarios of a new UK-EU relationship

Workshop on the future prospects of UK’s membership (or not) in the EU after the referendum

Location:

CIDOB, sala Jordi Maragall, Elisabets 12, 08001 Barcelona

Organized by:

CIDOB and LSE Europp with the support of the Europe for Citizens programme

The aim of this workshop is to analyse the scenarios of the British referendum on the EU membership that will take place on 23 June 2016. The workshop will discuss the negotiations of the British government with the EU, the campaign of the referendum, the internal developments in the UK and the EU and will present the scenarios that might prevail after the referendum is held.

The three scenarios foreseen will be:

  1. Bremain: The UK stays in the EU
  2. A “soft” Brexit
  3. A “harsh” Brexit

For each of the scenarios, paper presenters and participants will analyse the prospects of each scenario, the effects of the negotiations on the referendum campaign and the UK-EU relationship after the referendum. The papers will also present the economic, political, social and geopolitical effects of each scenario, attempting to devise the new UK-EU relationship if they materialise. The workshop will pay particular attention to the political dynamics in the EU following the Brexit referendum, the relationship between the Member States and the effects for the European project, as well as for the future of the UK.
