CIDOB with the support of Abertis and the Europe for Citizens programme is pleased to invite you to a European Breakfast-Jaime Arias on May 6, with the participation of Patrick Cockburn as a special guest.

Patrick Cockburn is an Irish journalist who has been a Middle East correspondent since 1979 for the Financial Times and, presently, The Independent. He also worked as a correspondent in Moscow and Washington and is a frequent contributor to the London Review of Books. He was awarded Foreign Commentator of the Year at the 2013 Editorial Intelligence Comment Awards and Foreign Affairs Jour nalist of the Year 2014.

In his last book, The Rise of Islamic State: ISIS and the New Sunni Revolution, Patrick Cockburn describes the conflicts behind a dramatic unraveling of US foreign policy. He shows how the West created the conditions for ISIS’s explosive success by stoking the war in Syria. The West—the US and NATO in particular—underestimated the militants’ potential until it was too late and failed to act against jihadi sponsors in Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan.
