European Breakfast with Kemal Kirişci, TÜSİAD Senior Fellow and Turkey Project Director, Brookings Institution

CIDOB and Elcano Royal Institute organise a new European Breakfast-Jaime Arias on February 16 with the participation of Kemal Kirişci,TÜSİAD Senior Fellow and director of the Center on the United States and Europe’s Turkey Project at Brookings Institution,as a special guest.  

Turkey’s current leadership is in frequent disagreement with its Western allies. They diverge, among other, on the role of Kurdish militias in Syria, on human rights and fundamental freedoms issues and their respective relations with Russia. Turkey is also frustrated with its never-ending accession process to the EU and influential figures in Turkey have raised doubts on NATO’s solidarity vis-à-vis Turkey’s security concerns. Many in the West also question whether Turkey functions as a dependable ally for the United States, NATO and the EU. Kemal Kirişci’s new book, “Turkey and the West: Faultlines in a Troubled Alliance,” argues that, despite these problems, the domestic and regional realities are now edging Turkey toward improving its relations with the West. 

With an expertise in Turkish foreign policy and migration studies, Kirişci runs the Turkey Project Policy Paper series and frequently writes on the latest developments out of Turkey. Before joining Brookings, Kirişci was a professor of International Relations and held the Jean Monnet chair in European integration in the department of Political Science and International Relations at Boğaziçi University in Istanbul. His areas of research interest include EU-Turkish relations, U.S.-Turkish relations, Turkish foreign and trade policies, European integration, immigration issues, ethnic conflicts, and refugee movements.
