Christopher Donnelly served four NATO Secretary Generals as Special Adviser for Central and Eastern Europe between 1989 and 2003. Before advising the highest level of NATO, he was director of the Soviet Studies Centre at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Between 2003 and 2010, he was Head of the Advanced Research and Assessment Group at the Defence Academy of the UK. He now directs the UK’s Institute for Statecraft.
Born in Rochdale, Lancashire (United Kingdom) he graduated from Manchester University in 1969. He has published numerous articles on Russian and Soviet military and political issues. He is the author of Red Banner - the Soviet Military System in Peace and War (1988). From 1970 to 1993, he served as a reserve officer in the British Territorial Army.
