Since the mid-2000s, different strategies were implemented to address the security threat posed by violent extremism to contemporary societies. In Europe, in addition to national-scale programmes aiming at countering violent extremism, several States, regions and cities moved towards holistic policies to prevent violent extremism (PVE).
This seminar will bring together experts on violent extremism from different fields (academia, think tanks, policy makers, civil society organisations) and will address the following questions: What PVE programmes, initiatives and policies have been developed at the local level across Europe? What conclusions can be drawn from these strategies? Should PVE strategies be designed as such or should they be included to the wider agenda of social policies? How can we prevent not getting trapped in the same pitfalls of CVE policies? To what extent are local responses substantially different from national ones?
