Afghanistan remains the second source country for the global refugee population: only Syria ranks higher in this category. Commentary in the Western media, and to some extend in domestic Afghan media, does not often capture the real voices of those Afghans who are leaving their country to seek refuge abroad. This is usually a life of uncertainty, followed after a perilous journey, in Europe and other Western countries. Is leaving an easy option? What forces so many Afghans to leave their country? How unique are the individual stories of migration from Afghanistan? The project director Dr. Emma Hooper will present the Sources of Tension in Afghanistan and Pakistan: A Regional Perspective (STAP RP) policy research project, and Hameed Hakimi and Barin Haymon, the authors of a new STAP RP policy research paper The Voices Behind the Refugee Outflow from Afghanistan (June 2016) will share their research findings.
